Tuscan, Arizona - Elwood Paschall "Woody" Stroupe, 87, of Oro Valley, AZ, died peacefully on Saturday, January 10, 2026. His wife, Patricia ("Patty"), and his two daughters, Kerri and Traci, were by his side.
Woody was born on May 26, 1938, to Elwood and Christell Stroupe in Charlotte, North Carolina. He grew up in Charlotte and Louisville, Kentucky, and went on to graduate from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology with a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering. While at Rose-Hulman, Woody excelled both academically and athletically, earning induction into the Athletic Hall of Fame for his accomplishments on the basketball court and on both sides of the football field. He received the first Academic All-American award in the school's history.
He then graduated from Purdue University with an MS in Chemical/Nuclear Engineering at Purdue. But more importantly, Purdue is where he met Patty. After graduation, he served two years in the Army Corps of Engineers. He then joined the National Reserves while he started his career in the nuclear industry at GE while simultaneously earning a JD from the University of Santa Clara.
Woody had a long and distinguished career in the nuclear industry, investigating the Three Mile Island disaster and working on several Department of Energy initiatives, most notably the Yucca Mountain Project. Known for his dedication and integrity, he was deeply respected and genuinely loved as a manager and leader. Woody also served for a time as the Vice-Chairman of the Clark County Republican Party during his retirement.
Above all, Woody cherished his 63 years of marriage to Patty. Together they enjoyed playing tennis, traveling the world, attending church, and playing cards. Woody had an adventurous heart and loved hiking and snorkeling. Woody also loved spending time with his family—laughing, playing games, cheering them on, offering warm hugs, and savoring slices of chocolate pie. He would do anything for his daughters and grandchildren, even swimming in cold water.
"Poppy Woody's" legacy of love, hard work, adventure, and laughter will be carried on not only by Patty, Kerri and Traci, but also by his sons-in-law: Matt and Allyn, his grandchildren: Rachel, Taylor, Eliza, Emma, Kai, and John, and his great-grandchildren: Eleanor Jean, John Elwood, and Elizabeth Lynn. Woody is also survived by one sibling, Winifred Silvers, and his nieces and nephews: Joan Stephenson, Mike Stephenson, Ashley Jones, and Connor Jones.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at Faith Community Lutheran Church (3505 S. Town Center Drive) in Las Vegas, Nevada at 11:00 am on Saturday, March 7, with a reception following. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages memorial contributions/donations to either: (1) Tunnels to Towers or (2) Faith Community Lutheran Church.
