Harry Donoian Obituary

HARRY A. DONOIAN

1935-2025

Harry Donoian, aged 90, passed away on July 12, 2025, after having suffered a stroke. Harry was born on February 17, 1935 in Bronx, New York, the first child of Harry and Helen Donoian. Harry grew up in New York and graduated from Long Island High School in 1953.

Harry was very active in the Armenian community as a member of the Armenian Youth Federation. After high school Harry served his country in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1956. He had many memories of his tour in Germany and especially of serving as a guard in the U.S. Army prison at Auschwitz.

He earned a Bachelor of Science from the School of Commerce, Accounts and Finance at New York University in 1961. Harry and Patricia Hurray of Queens, N.Y., a former classmate, were married in 1963 and had two wonderful sons, David and Michael.

Harry hit his academic stride when he earned his master's degree in Economics from Catholic University of America in 1968. He was hired by the U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics, where he authored and published many authoritative articles. While there he also became actively involved in the American Federation of Government Employees, AFGE, first as a union steward and then working his way in to other leadership positions.

His expertise was eventually sought by other unions. During his career he served in various roles for AFSCME, the UAW and SEIU, to name a few. He never lost his passion and zeal for justice and fairness for all people and especially for workers.

Harry's sons, David and Michael, were stars on the soccer field , so Harry, naturally, became a sought-after soccer referee. He officiated soccer games until he was 75 years old and received the United States Soccer Federation Certificate of Lifetime Membership in 2007.

A somewhat less known side of Harry was his avid support for organizations rescuing and protecting abused and abandoned animals. Many puppies, kittens and donkeys will miss Harry.

Harry is loved and mourned by his wife of 46 years, Elizabeth Stephens, and his sons David of Green Bay, Wisconsin and Michael of Saukville, Wisconsin and his beloved cat, Sam of Las Vegas. He is survived by two grandchildren Jessica Donoian Minneapolis, Minnesota and Austin Donoian Krueger, Green Bay, Wisconsin and two great grandchildren, Charlotte Donoian Krueger and William Donoian Krueger, both of Green Bay, Wisconsin. He is also survived by nephews and cousins.

Harry was predeceased by his parents and his grandson, Zachary Donoian of Saukville and his sister April Nercesian.
