Las Vegas, NV - James William Denton, 71, died on Friday, July 25 at St Rose Hospital.
Jim was born a miracle baby in an army hospital in Germany weighing just 1.5 pounds to an American soldier, Melvin Denton, and his German bride, Sieglinde Denton. He went on to become a driving member of the Nevada political community.
As a political consultant, Jim took on candidates who were best suited to service in public office, regardless of political affiliation, race, gender, or ethnic background. In Nevada, his clients included governors, supreme court justices, legislators, district court judges, mayors, and members of various city councils. Many close friendships grew out of these initially business relationships.
He was on Nevada's first Homeless Coalition and worked with shelters to aid abused women and children. As a public policy advocate, he spearheaded the successful effort to amend the Nevada Constitution to require the Legislature to fund Education First and initiatives to keep our doctors in Nevada.
An avid sports fan, one of Jim's first goals after retiring was to visit as many baseball parks as possible. Jim enjoyed travel and managed to see over 80 countries during his life. One of his biggest joys, though, was buying bikes and other toys for children over the Holidays, only requiring that his donations remained anonymous.
Jim is survived by his much-beloved family; wife Dani Denton; step-son and daughter-in-law Matthew and Meghan Long; step-daughter and son-in-law Stacey and Brice Cochran; four grandchildren, Caiden and Ava Cochran and Elayne and Luke Long; as well as his sisters, Grace Lynda Occhiuzzo and Diane Regal; a brother, Michael Denton; nieces and nephews, and many loved friends.
At Jim's request, no funeral service will be held. However, the family invites friends and loved ones to share memories and celebrate Jim's life at their home on Saturday August 2 from 4 to 7 pm. For directions, contact the family.
