MICHAEL PRESTON STARR

Michael Preston Starr, age 67, was a respected gaming executive whose distinguished career spanned nearly four decades. He passed away peacefully on April 29, 2025, in Shelton, Washington. Born on February 13, 1958, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Michael spent much of his life and career in Las Vegas, Nevada, where he raised his three beloved children. A graduate of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and a proud Las Vegan, Michael's journey began with a move to Las Vegas after high school, driven by a passion for hospitality. He rose from humble beginnings at the Sands Hotel & Casino in the 1980's, to leadership roles in some of Las Vegas's most iconic establishments, including the Sahara, Luxor, and Mandalay Bay. Later, Michael brought his leadership to Miami, Florida, where he played a pivotal role in the redevelopment of the iconic Fontainebleau on Miami Beach, and the prolonged development of what is now the Fontainebleau, Las Vegas. He also applied his skills to Indian gaming, working with tribal-owned casinos in Arizona, California, Michigan, Oklahoma, and, Washington, where he ultimately retired with his loyal four-legged companion, Presley, never far from his side. Known for his sharp business acumen and reliability, Michael cherished giving back to his alma mater by speaking to students and guest lecturing classes. He took pride in mentoring numerous up-and-coming hospitality professionals, and was a passionate supporter of UNLV athletics and an oenophile. Left to cherish Michael's legacy are his children, Mark Starr, Sarah Starr, and Nicholas Starr; sister, Marti Starr; and former wife and mother to his three adored children, Sandra Starr. He was preceded in death by his parents, Tobie and Burton Starr; and his brother, Mark Starr. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the Starr family encourages memorial donations be directed to Alzheimer's research via the Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health, or UNLV Athletics, honoring his lasting passions.
