Robert Asson Obituary

ROBERT JOSPEPH ASSON

October 31, 1939 - May 13, 2025

Robert was born to Pierina Purin and Albert Asson who farmed in Rupert, Idaho. He went to Pioneer Grade School and graduated from Minico High School in 1958. He attended Idaho State College in Pocatello, Idaho for one year. He served four years in the Idaho State National Guard.

He married Bernadine (Bennie) Johnson – the love of his life on November 14, 1959 at St. Nicholas Church in Rupert, Idaho. They moved to Ogden, Utah where he attended Steven Henager Business College for one year. He also attended Steven Henager Business/Computer College for one year in Salt Lake City, Utah. The family moved to Las Vegas, Nevada in July 1963.

He worked as an accountant for Desert Inn/Stardust Hotels until Uncle Arnold convinced him to work for him, managing his trailer business and various investments. Robert was working towards his CPA degree when Joe Sanson hired him as the Controller of his Investment Company. He became Mr. Sanson's right hand man and was treated like Mr. Sanson's son and closest confidant for the next 20 years. In 1990, when Mr. Sanson passed away unexpectantly, Robert formed his own LLC. He made many dear and lasting friendships along the way.

He loved fly-fishing in Montana and Canada. He and his family bowled with the Bishop Gorman Bowling League for many years. He enjoyed playing tennis, golf and softball with his family. He enjoyed watching football; his favorite team was the Denver Broncos. For many years, Robert and Bennie were supporters of UNLV Runnin' Rebels Basketball. Most recently, he enjoyed cheering for the Vegas Golden Knights.

Robert aka 'RJ' loved his family dearly. Over 55 years ago he started a tradition with an annual trip at Easter including destinations such as Death Valley, Palm Springs, St. George, Hawaii, St. Thomas, Virgin Islands and Disney World to spend quality time as a family.

He was a member of the Knights of Columbus. He generously supported Catholic Charities, UNLV, Bishop Gorman HS, Shriner's Children's Hospital and St. Jude's to name a few. They served as Presidents of St. Anne's Parents Club 1974-75.

Robert is preceded in death by Pierina and Albert Asson, Carolyn (David) Asson, Cathy (David) Asson, Lenny and Peggy Asson, and Sal (Mary Ann) Batres.

Robert is survived by his loving wife, Bennie and his five children: Joan (Tony) White, Debbie (Mike) Dean, Tammy (Dave) Duff, Rob (Julie) Asson and Rick Asson; his older brother David (JoAnne) Asson and younger sister Mary Ann Batres; his grandchildren: Christina and Breanna White, Jake Dean, Juliana Dean, Jamie (Michael) Touzinsky, Josie (Evan) Shappell and Jessica (Jason) Doege and Alicia Asson; great grandchildren: Jackson Doege, Emry and Nell Shappell.
