Robert A Riester (Bob) Obituary

Las Vegas, NV - Robert "Bob" Riester, a proud veteran and longtime Las Vegas resident, passed away on August 18, 2025, at the age of 83. Bob was born in Scranton, Pennsylvania, to Herman "Tubby" and Jeanne Riester. After graduating from Strong Vincent High School in Erie, PA, he immediately enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, beginning a distinguished 20-year military career (1960-1980). He served at multiple bases across the U.S. and overseas, including during the Vietnam War. As an air traffic controller, he was instrumental in safely guiding airmen home from combat missions under some of the most challenging conditions. His service earned him numerous citations, awards, and ribbons, including the Vietnam Service Medal and the National Defense Service Medal. In 1963, while stationed in Germany, Bob married Heidi Kolb. Together, they had two children, Bobby and Andrea. After retiring from the Air Force, Bob continued to serve his country as a defense contractor-first with EG&G and later with Modern Technology Solutions Inc., where he remained until his retirement in 2017. His work played a critical role in supporting the U.S. Air Force's technological edge, including contributions to key projects such as the B-1 and B-2 bombers. He was respected for his expertise and mentorship, and remained closely connected to his colleagues, affectionately known as the "Range Rats", until his passing. Bob remarried in 2007 to his beloved wife Kai and spent his retirement years devoted to her care and companionship. He is remembered for his sharp intellect, dry wit, unwavering dedication to service, and deep loyalty to country, friends and family. Bob is survived by his wife, Kai Riester; his sister, Jeanne (Joseph) Pavlik; his daughter, Andrea (Tom) Johnson; stepchildren, Aranya Tangsuvanich, Panomsak "Tom" and Nopporn "Jack" Wandeevong; grandson Kyler (Miranda) Riester; step-grandchildren Pyline J Tangsuvanich (Libo Li), Ajay Tangsuvanich (Ellen Pham), Prim, Ploy and Varintorn Wandeevong; and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Robert "Bobby" Riester Jr.; and his best friend, Pat Sharp. Bob had a lifelong passion for golf and played every Saturday morning with a close-knit group of friends, always teeing off at first light. One of his proudest golf moments was a hole-in-one on Hole 14 (154 yards with a 6 iron) at Rhodes Ranch Golf Club in 2011. His home office proudly displayed his golf trophies and mementos — symbols of a game he loved and a life well played. A memorial service and interment of ashes will take place at Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery on September 25 at 12:00 PM. Immediately afterwords, friends are invited to join the family from 1-3pm at the Boulder Creek Golf Course in Boulder City, NV for a reception honoring Bob's life and service. Bob leaves behind not just his family, but a large circle of friends and colleagues — the quiet professionals behind the scenes, continuing the mission of keeping our nation safe. The family extends heartfelt thanks to all of you for the camaraderie, laughter, and enduring friendship you shared with Bob.

A life of service. A game well played. He will be deeply missed.
