RUSSELL "RUSTY" POWERS
Sept. 29, 1946 – Sept. 12, 2025
Russell Powers passed away on September 12, 2025, at the age of 78 in Las Vegas, Nevada. He is survived by his beloved wife, Rebecca Powers, along with her daughters and their families. He is also survived by his sister, Tameysin Dare Williams, her husband Rich, their children, and many other relatives and friends, including his lifelong friends Gherald and Cathy Hoopes.
Russ grew up in Safford, Arizona, where he began working at a young age mowing lawns, delivering newspapers, and caring for neighbors' pets while they were away. As a teenager, he worked in a butcher shop. His love for animals was evident throughout his life—he even had a pet skunk and duck as a child, along with many other animals over the years. In high school Russ played football.
He attended Arizona State University and earned a degree in management. After graduation, Russ was drafted into the Army during the Vietnam War. Although he had enlisted in the reserves, he was nearly deployed to Vietnam; however, a last-minute call from the reserves kept him stationed in San Diego.
Following his military service, Russ managed gas stations from San Diego to the Mexican border. He later transitioned into a role collecting medical information, which brought him to Las Vegas—back when Tropicana Avenue was still unpaved and the city was just beginning to grow.
Russ spent over 35 years as a Homeowners Association (HOA) manager, retiring at age 73 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and a subsequent diagnosis of esophageal cancer. Despite battling cancer twice, shingles, and lung damage from immunotherapy, Russ remained active tending to his yard, maintaining his home, and faithfully watching weekly church services.
He often said that getting cancer was a blessing because it brought him closer to God. He spent one to two hours each day reading the Bible and found peace in his faith. Russ's ashes and our animal ashes will be thrown in the ocean where he loved to swim- La Jolla Cove in San Diego. He also loved to scuba dive. Russ is now with God, experiencing his ultimate healing. At least he does not have to be an HOA manager of the gated community HEAVEN because GOD is.
A memorial service will be held at Faith Community Lutheran Church on Town Drive in Las Vegas on Saturday, November 15, at 11 a.m. The service will also be live-streamed. https://boxcast.tv/view/celebration-of-life-for-russell-powers-zvvqppoikid0obf3vis1
