THOMAS GEORGE THOMPSON (Tommy) Obituary

Las Vegas, Nevada - Thomas G. Thompson, 93, a devoted son, husband, father, uncle, great uncle, grandfather, great grandfather, retired Army Officer, decorated Vietnam Combat Veteran, and friend to all passed away on Memorial Day, May 25, 2026, in Las Vegas, NV, surrounded by his family.

Born in Jamestown, ND, March 21, 1933, Tommy was the son of Thomas M. and Winnifred Thompson. He grew up in Tacoma, WA; served as an Altar Boy at their local Catholic Church; attended Bellarmine High School where he was the Captain of the Basketball and Football Teams and graduated Class of 1951. Tommy attended a semester at a local Seminary and then a semester at State College of Washington (WSU) while he patiently waited to hear from the United States Military Academy, West Point, NY. He received his acceptance letter in June of 1953 -- a letter that launched his life dramatically in a new direction. Tommy was dubbed "smirkin' Thompson" at West Point because he couldn't help but find humor in everything, even while getting reprimanded by upperclassmen! Tommy graduated USMA West Point Class of 1957 with a Bachelor of Science Degree and joined "The Long Gray Line" as an Artillery Officer.

Tommy met Janet Barnes, an American Airlines Stewardess, in Dallas, TX. They were married at West Point's Catholic Chapel in 1958. Tommy and Jan raised three children and traveled across the Country to his military duty stations where many lasting relationships were made along the way. His military career as an Artillery Officer, took him on remarkable journeys around the world to Germany, Vietnam, Thailand, South Korea, Indonesia, and other countries in Southeast Asia.

Tommy served in combat as Foreign Area Specialist Advisor to the Vietnamese Army while assigned to MACV HQs during the Vietnam War 1965-66. He completed his first master's degree in Business Administration at Butler University in 1967. He earned his second master's degree in Foreign Studies at the University of South Carolina. He was assigned to the 18th Airborne Corps Artillery at Ft. Bragg, NC in 1975. His next assignment was with CINCPAC HQs (INDOPACOM) in Oahu, HI. Tommy retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1985 after 28 years of honorable active-duty service.

Tommy worked as an Engineer/Scientist at McDonnell-Douglas Aerospace & Defense Systems (later Boeing Corporation) in Huntington Beach, CA, on the International Space Station (ISS) in their International Integrations Department as a second career. Tommy and Jan settled in Henderson, NV, where they enjoyed beautiful weather, frequent visits from family and friends, and many fantastic desert sunsets from their poolside patio for the past 27 years.

Tommy "never met a stranger." He loved people and was dedicated to helping others by giving back to his community and donating to worthy causes. Tommy enjoyed golfing, sailing the California Coast at Marina Del Rey, and boating with his family at Lake Meade. He volunteered at the USO Harry Reid International Airport; contributed greatly to the Southern Nevada Chapter, Military Officer's Association of America (MOAA); and the Signers Chapter, Sons of the American Revolution (SAR). Some of his favorite events he coordinated included the JROTC Awards Ceremonies; the Academy Send-Off dinners; MOAA's participation in Veterans Day Parades; and unforgettable luaus in his backyard. As a member of the West Point Association of Graduates, he donated generously to the academy and frequently attended Class of '57 reunions to reconnect with his fellow classmates.

Tommy is survived by his wife Janet; his three children Tom Jr., Jennifer, and Michael; his five grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; and his many nieces and nephews.

"Tommy, you will always live on in our hearts..."
